Understanding & Achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal # 2 : Zero Hunger

The Sustainable Development Goals which are set by the United Nations aim to make this world a sustainable and healthy world for every living being on this planet. In this article, we will discuss the importance of SDG # 2 which is Zero Hunger. By the end of the article, you will be able to understand the significance of this goal and what will be the road map to achieve it.

Understanding Hunger - The Greatest Enemy

You might think of hunger as when there is a lack of food for an individual or a group of individuals but it is much more than that. Hunger is when people have no access to food. They have no food security. They have no availability of nutrition-rich food or the food they prefer, which they require for their growth and a healthy lifestyle.

The Significance of Achieving Zero Hunger:
The main goal of achieving SDG-2 is to eradicate all the pains associated with hunger directly or indirectly. By achieving this goal we will develop a world where there will be food security for all. Everyone will have access to safe and healthy food resources. There will be adequate production and supply of food materials for all. The production of food materials is based on sustainable practices where there is efficient use of the resources, no adverse impact on climate and increased production.

Nourish the physical and mental abilities:
Access to quality food full of nutrition will nurture the physical and mental abilities of the individuals.

Establishment of an Economically Stable Society:
As we take steps to ensure food security for all, an economically strong and stable society will be established. A society where there is efficient production and consumption. A society where sustainable practices in agriculture and farming are adopted.

Reduces conflicts and increases Social Stability and Inclusion :
As hunger and its causes are eliminated from the society, the society becomes more and more socially stable. The conflicts, crimes and social unrest will be minimized.

Creates a Green Environment:
A clean and green environment is established when sustainable agricultural and farming practices are employed. Achieving this goal will reduce the adverse impacts of production and consumption on the environment.

The Roadmap to Achieving SDG-2: Zero Hunger
Let's discuss the steps through which we can achieve this goal.

1. Empowering local food production:
We should support and empower the local farmers, especially those doing small-scale production. This will increase the production of local goods in the market, with obviously low prices and affordability for all. Governments and state institutions must provide them resources and training.

2. Preventing Food Items to go wasted:
Due to certain or sometimes uncertain reasons, many food items are wasted during their journey from the field/farm to the plate of the consumer. This is often caused during transportation and storage processes. By ensuring sustainable farming practices, a smooth supply chain, and doing investments in transportation and storage of the items it can be reduced.

3. Awareness and education of Malnutrition:
Special awareness campaigns and educational training should be conducted regarding malnutrition. Strict policies should be made by the governments to ensure that no child is left behind in getting a balanced nutritious diet. Mothers should be educated and trained. Special care centres should be established only to treat malnutrition in children.

4. Collaboration and Support:
Developed countries must play a key role in providing aid whether it is financial or technical to developing and underdeveloped countries. Global conflicts should be avoided and those existing must be resolved so that people are not deprived of basic resources like food items. Capacity-building initiatives must be taken to uplift every country out of hunger.
